In July 2019, UPM started the construction of its second pulp mill in Uruguay, in the town of Paso de los Toros/Pueblo Centenario, department of Durazno. This is one of the biggest pulp mills in the world, with a production capacity of 2 million tons per year.
The work is still in progress, and until then UPM has relied on Ingener for the following works:
– Engineering, construction and commissioning of the 150 kV connection and metering station to connect the plant to the national power grid. The works also include the expansion of the Bonete B 150 kV substation.
– Design, execution and commissioning of the temporary power grid, including its subsequent management, operation and maintenance. Management of the temporary electrical network. This work includes the supply and installation of 12 substations in 33/0.4 kV of 1.0 MVA each, internal electrical network in 33 kV, low voltage distribution, distribution boards and backup generator sets.
– Electrification and process instrumentation works, including the supply, laying and connection of more than 350 km of MV and LV cables and the installation of more than 8,000 instrumentation Hook-Ups.
– Power electrification works, including the installation of a GIS 150 kV substation with 7 bays inside the plant, the laying and connection of 7.5 km of 150 kV cable, the installation of 4 150/33 kV transformers, the installation of 90 33 kV MV switchgear, the installation of more than 1,500 motor protection and control panels (MCCs), among others.
– Process piping works, including the supply and assembly of more than 500 tons of piping (mainly stainless steel) and the execution of more than 100,000 inches of welding, all under quality certification according to European standards.
– Complete thermal conditioning and industrial ventilation system for the plant, including the installation of more than 400 tons of metal ducts, the installation of 25 chillers for chilled water generation and 140 air handlers.
– Assembly of the two steam turbines of the plant, each with a rated power of 200 MW.
– Perimeter lighting of the plant, including more than 14 km of road lighting with 160 W LED luminaires; totaling a lighting installation of approximately 60 kW, including a remote control system for monitoring and management of the lighting system.
– Outdoor lighting system for the entire plant, including street lighting, lighting of the wood yard by means of 30 meter high monopoles with 550 W LED projects, etc. It is a lighting system of almost 200 kW of power, including a telecontrol system for monitoring and management of the lighting system.
